What is Monkeypox?

Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus which is part of the same family of viruses as smallpox.

The virus transmitted from animal to human is by direct contact with the blood, bodily fluids, or cutaneous or mucosal lesions of infected animals and from human to human is by close contact with respiratory secretions, skin lesions of an infected person or recently contaminated objects.

Monkeypox Symptoms

Monkeypox typically presents clinically with fever, rash and swollen lymph nodes and may lead to a range of medical complications. Symptoms could last from 2 to 4 weeks.

The incubation period (interval from infection to onset of symptoms) of monkeypox is usually from 6 to 13 days but can range from 5 to 21 days.

Monkeypox Treatment

There is no treatment specifically for monkeypox virus infection. The monkeypox is a self-limited disease. Most infected cases can recover within a few weeks without any treatment. However, it can also cause severe illness or even death. The case fatality ratio has been around 3–6%. Children, pregnant women and people with a weak immune system are at high risk for serious infection.

According to WHO, smallpox vaccines are shown in some observational studies to be around 85% effective against monkeypox infection with “past data from Africa”, where outbreaks have occurred for decades.

How to Prevent Monkeypox?

Monkeypox is a virus that can be transmitted mainly through close contact. So, make sure to avoid close contact with sick animals and people, especially those with skin or genital lesions.
